Voting Resources : How to Vote

Plan Ahead: Vote Absentee

Wisconsin State Statutes allow anyone who is unable or unwilling to go to the polls on Election Day to vote by absentee ballot.

You will need to register to vote before an absentee ballot can be sent to you. Please see the How to Register to Vote tab on this guide.

In the City of La Crosse the completed ballot must be received by the City Clerk no later than 5:00 p.m. on the day of the election

  • If mailing your ballot, be sure to place it in the mail with sufficient time for it to be received by the City Clerk on or before Election Day.
  • You may also deposit your voted absentee ballot in the GREEN drop box on the north side of City Hall before 5:00 p.m. on Election Day.
  • You may also deliver your absentee ballot directly to your respective polling location by 8:00 p.m. on Election Day.

Election Day: Bring your Photo ID

Not registered yet? You can register to vote at your polling place on election day. Please see the How to Register to Vote tab on this guide.

Wisconsin requires a photo ID to vote. For example, a valid WI driver's license.

For UWL students, the Eagle ID Card can be used as your photo ID for voting in Wisconsin.

If you plan to use your Eagle ID to vote, it must contain:

  • Issued date
  • Voter Expiration date is no later than two years after the Issue Date (even if the Voter Expiration date has expired)
  • Your signature is on the back of your Eagle ID card
  • Eagle ID card must be accompanied by a separate document that proves enrollment. WINGS can be used for this: WINGS Voter ID Enrollment Verification instructions.
