Murphy Library has licensed a variety of independent, classic, and documentary films for 1- or 3-year license terms through Kanopy.
Most Kanopy films have closed captions and interactive transcripts. If a film does not have closed captions available yet, we can request this to be prioritized.
Please see this page of our website for information on how to share or embed Kanopy videos.
Public Performance Rights
Most of Kanopy's streaming films come with public performance rights for our campus, but PPR should be verified for individual titles prior to public use.
If you try to play a film on Kanopy's website that is not currently licensed by the library, you will be directed to fill our a request form that looks like this:
If you would like to request a film, you can either fill out the form or contact the library directly with your request. In your message, please include information on your intended use of the film and the time frame in which it is needed. More information about requesting movies can be found on the Finding and Requesting Movies tab of this guide.
In addition to the major platforms described in this guide, occasionally Murphy Library purchases permanent or limited licenses for movie titles on other platforms. Additionally, some films have been digitized and are locally hosted on our own server. Any special notes about the rights and requirements of these films are included in their catalog records.
