The Prokaryotes 3rd edition is an multimedia publication that is published incrementally in 16 releases over 4 years. Release 3.0 is identical in content to print The Prokaryotes: Second Edition published in 4 volumes in 1992. Subsequent releases typically have 12 to 15 chapters that replace 2nd-edition chapters or expand the content with new material. Approximately 25% of the content will be fully updated each year over a four-year period until the work is completely revised. Thereafter, material will be continuously added to reflect developments in prokaryotic microbiology on topics such as characterization and identification, ecophysiology and biochemistry, organism monographs, symbiotic associations, genomics, and biotechnology.
